My practice draws heavily upon themes of nature and memory to create dreamlike images that reconnect the observer with nature. I explore these themes using digital and alternative photographic processes. Cyanotype print processes and Photograms are my main forms of mediums; however, my practice began with a digital camera. The immediacy that comes with digital photography allows me to capture an image of a moment I have experienced, drawing on places from childhood memories that connect me to nature. I then take these images and develop them through alternative photographic processes, reasserting my experience and creating feelings of intimacy. Through toning and layering my prints, I create dream like images, complimenting the themes of nature in my work.
I believe there is a strong connection between memories and dreams, both are as natural as the subjects I photograph. The aim of the imagery is to provoke the observer’s memory of a place or a dream to create a connection to the work. Through doing this, the observer is also drawing connections to the reality of nature portrayed throughout the prints.
I then stepped away from the digital camera and began to create my own landscapes using alternative photography. I produced a series of Photograms using various natural objects whilst also incorporating plastic vacuum forms of tree bark, to create imagery of abstract landscapes. I use known objects from the landscape to create and reveal to the eye of the observer imagery they have never seen before yet are strangely familiar with.
